📖 The City of God (De civitate Dei contra paganos) was written between 413–426 AD by St. Augustine ✝️, one of the greatest philosophers of the medieval era.
It is a masterpiece of Western thought 🌍, crafted as a defense of Christianity against pagan claims that the sack of Rome in 410 AD 🏛️⚔️ was the fault of Christian emperors abolishing pagan worship.
🛡️ Augustine argued the opposite: Christianity had saved Rome from total destruction 🏰 and that its downfall came instead from internal moral decay ⚖️.
🏙️ He described two symbolic societies:
