๐ The City of God (De civitate Dei contra paganos) was written between 413โ426 AD by St. Augustine โ๏ธ, one of the greatest philosophers of the medieval era.
It is a masterpiece of Western thought ๐, crafted as a defense of Christianity against pagan claims that the sack of Rome in 410 AD ๐๏ธโ๏ธ was the fault of Christian emperors abolishing pagan worship.
๐ก๏ธ Augustine argued the opposite: Christianity had saved Rome from total destruction ๐ฐ and that its downfall came instead from internal moral decay โ๏ธ.
๐๏ธ He described two symbolic societies:
-
The City of God ๐ โ the community of the elect, rooted in faith ๐.
-
The City of Man ๐ โ the realm of the damned, founded on unbelief โ.
These two โcitiesโ are spiritual forces in conflict since the fall of the angels ๐ผโก, inseparably intertwined ๐ in earthly history until the end of time โณ.
โฉ Augustine also outlined a theological interpretation of history: linear ๐, predestined, beginning with Creation ๐ and culminating in the Second Coming of Christ โ๏ธโจ.
